Understanding Teen Driving Laws in Colorado

Every state does things a little differently. This is especially true when it comes to driving. The Colorado teen driving laws are unique, and it's important that you follow them if you want to stay on the road. Here's a breakdown of the Colorado teen driving laws you need to know if you plan to upgrade to an adult license once you turn 21.

Colorado's Age Requirements and Restrictions

In Colorado, you can apply for your learner's permit when you're 15. Once you have it, you're able to drive with a licensed adult in the front seat. Though this is a major step toward independence, the real freedom comes a year later when you can apply for a minor license.

With a license, you're able to hit the road on your own, but the Colorado teen driving laws do incorporate additional age restrictions. New drivers cannot:

  • Drive between midnight and 5 a.m. unless they're with a parent or guardian, have signed documentation stating that they're traveling to a school- or work-related function or are an emancipated minor.
  • Drive with any passengers under 21 (with the exception of siblings) until they've had their license for at least six months.
  • Drive with more than one passenger under 21 (with the exception of siblings) until they've had their license for at least 12 months.
  • Talk on the phone while driving until they are 18 or older. This includes hands-free calls. Texting while driving is never allowed.
  • Have any trace of alcohol in their system if they are under the age of 21.

Colorado makes exceptions to most of these age restrictions in case of emergency. Still, it's best to follow these Colorado teen driving laws if you aim to graduate to an adult license.
