Earning an Indiana drivers license should be simple. We know your goal is to get in the drivers seat as soon as possible and with as little hassle as possible—and we can help you.

How does online drivers ed work?

  1. If you're at least 15 years old, you can take this approved online Indiana drivers education class to begin earning your license!
  2. Just create an account to start your Indiana online drivers ed.
  3. Continue taking the online course. Take an online module each day, and forget spending your weekends in a classroom!
  4. Take your graded online final exam. Just for extra practice, you'll have a chance to take practice final exams before the real graded exam. You also have three chances to take the graded final, and once you achieve a total class score of at least 80%, you're done!
  5. After you finish our Indiana drivers education for teens, it's time to sign up for behind-the-wheel training. Take your Course Completion Certificate to a BMV-licensed driving school and enroll. Once enrolled you'll get a Certificate of Drivers Education (CDE) issued by your Indiana driving school. Take these documents to the BMV, along with your proof of residency and your social security number to get your permit.
  6. The permit allows you to drive with a licensed parent/guardian and begin in-car driving lessons with a licensed instructor.

If you haven't taken drivers ed, you must wait until you are 16 and 270 days old to get your probationary license.

How do I get my drivers license?

Take drivers ed when you're 15 years old.

  1. Start your Indiana drivers ed class.
  2. Apply for your Indiana drivers education learners permit.
  3. Begin in-car driving lessons with a driving instructor.
  4. Apply for your Indiana drivers license.

Step 1: Start your Indiana drivers ed class.

If you are at least 15 years old, you can start earning your license by beginning a drivers education class.

DriversEd.com lets you go at your own pace and connect from wherever you have internet access!

With our Indiana drivers education class, you:

  • Learn what you need to pass your learners permit written test
  • Learn the rules of the road and essential safe driving skills
  • Qualify for an auto insurance discount (where applicable)

Once you complete the online course, you will need a certificate of drivers education (CDE) from a BMV-licensed commercial driving school, needed to apply for a drivers education learners permit at the BMV. You will receive your CDE when you sign up for behind-the-wheel training.

Step 2: Apply for your Indiana drivers education learners permit

Once you receive your CDE, you can apply for your permit at a BMV License Branch near you.

  1. Be at least 15 years old.
  2. Pass a written test at the BMV.
  3. Present documents proving identity, residency and Social Security number.
  4. Present your CDE to the BMV.
  5. Pass a vision test.

Step 3: Take in-car driving lessons and complete the online drivers ed class.

To begin in-car driving lessons, you will need to schedule six hours of lessons with a licensed driving instructor in Indiana.

You will need to practice driving with a licensed driving instructor or under the supervision of a parent or guardian for at least 30 days before you can apply for your drivers license.

Note that your learners permit comes with the following restrictions:

If you have a learners permit and you are enrolled in an approved drivers education program you may practice driving only after you begin an approved drivers education program. You may drive only when you are accompanied by a certified driving instructor in the front seat of a vehicle equipped with dual brake controls, or when a parent, step-parent or guardian who is at least 21 years of age and has their valid drivers license with them is seated in your vehicle's passenger seat.

While you are completing your in-car driving lessons, you can continue to take and complete the DriversEd.com online course.

Step 4: Apply for your Indiana drivers license.

With drivers education, once you turn at least 16 years and 90 days old and held a valid Indiana learners permit for 180 days, you can apply for your drivers license.

To be eligible for the Indiana drivers license, you must:

  1. Provide proof of identity and date of birth, as well as principal address and mailing address.
  2. Provide proof of a valid Social Security number.
  3. Provide proof of citizenship or lawful residency status.
  4. Surrender any currently valid state-issued ID card.
  5. If younger than 18, have an appropriate family member sign the financial responsibility agreement.
  6. Pass a vision test.

Once you meet all the requirements, you will be issued a license.

If you are younger than 18, the license will be a probationary license, which is valid for 4 years from the date of issue and may not be renewed. For 90 days after, you may not drive with other passengers in the car unless there is someone at least 25 years old with a valid drivers license seated next to you.

Also with a probationary license, you may drive only when you and all your passengers have a safety belt properly fastened at all times when the car is in motion.

Once you turn 18, you can receive a full drivers license.
